How the mind works...

... to forget things. Or rather, to think you did something, and then actually didn't, or the other way round.

Today I was searching through my email to find the reservation code/ the booking reference for my flight ticket to Copenhagen next week. I could not find it. I searched through all my emails, and found one with almost the correct date, but from last year. Finally I realised that the reason that I could not find this email was that I never received it - I never made the booking. Scary to realise that I had browsed the airline website for prices several times during the last month and decided on the flight, but never came round to booking it!

P.S. Luckily it was still possible to get a ticket at not too expensive a price *phew*

Mus!

This weekend my dad came to visit me. With him he brought a van full of my stuff from Denmark. We unloaded the boxes - some to my room, some we put in the cellar, and some we brought to the university to fill my office shelves with my text books.
When I started unpacking the boxes I soon made an discomforting discovery: some of the boxes had been inhabited by mice! So far, I did not find a box with a mouse still in it, but I have found plenty of nibbled paper, and far worse, some of my old T-shirts gnawed to pieces to make material for their nests. I will look at the bright side - it was about time to throw out some of my old clothes anyway...

Carnaval is over

This year I did not go downtown to watch the parade, but it was impossible not to notice the silly costumes and decorated vehicles cruising the streets for the last couple of days. Last year I took a series of photographs from the parade which you can view in the glyn.dk/gallery.

Literate programming

It is never too late to add more good habits to your programming. Now I have installed ESS (Emacs Speaks Statistics) and I will use Sweave to document my R results.

More on good habits, read about Reproducible Research and Programming, and this introduction to Sweave.

New haircut

This is it. I finally gathered courage to do what I should have done years ago: I got my hair cut.
It was about time too, it was five years ago I last went to the hairdressers, and in the meantime, my hair grew incredibly long. The good thing about it was that my hair started to curl at the ends, giving me a more feminine look, but at the same time, wearing my hair in a ponytail all the time, just letting it grow, was very boring and very geek-like.
In the end it was so long that I could not wear it loose while dancing (it would get caught all the time) and I could not wear it up in a nice way while dancing witout the elastic bands falling out every few minutes. This might not sound like a big problem to you, but if you go dancing five or six times a week, you will understand my frustration.
So I went to the hairdressers and asked her to cut my hair, so it would still be long, but with some layers in front. She said that she would have to cut it quite a bit shorter to make it look nice with the layer effect and she showed me some pictures in a magazine to illustrate her idea. I agreed to let her take of a good deal of the length, and she cut the end of the ponytail for me to keep. When she finished cutting, I saw that it was quite a lot shorter than what she had shown me on the photos, almost half a meter shorter than it used to be. I am a bit sad that it she made it that short, and I miss my curly ponytail. However, the layer effect is nice, and suits my face much better than just straight hair drawn back. Even better, I can wear it loose and it will still look nice, so I can dance like crazy without worrying about my hair. So now I will enjoy all the advantages of my new haircut, and if I continue to miss my curls, I will just let my hair grow long again...

Why Danes are smug - a scientific study

The World Map of Happiness published from the University of Leicester, showed that the Danish population is unrivalled the most satisfied in Europe. Why is this? Because blondes have more fun? Because of the infamous "Danish Cuisine"? Or just because Danes love football?

Have fun reading the full article in the British Medical Journal: Why Danes are smug: comparative study of life satisfaction in the European Union

Sightseeing

A colleague asked me the other day about which parts of Holland I have been sightseeing during my time here. I had to answer him honestly: I have mostly seen the big cities that host the good salsa parties. And then of course, I have only seen the cities by night.

Shakes from Shakies

I have a weakness for fresh fruit shakes. Especially if I am a bit tired after a long days work or after dancing all night, I love to pass by the station and grab a fresh shake as a treat to myself. Mmmm delicious!

Print Queue

I must have dozed off at my desk, because I did not realise how long time had actually passed since I last sent a print job to the printer lj7... I thought it was just a few minutes ago...

Double Life

I love my job. It challenges me and I am having fun while working. I love salsa. It challenges me and I am having great fun while dancing. I need the dancing to get my mind of my work, and at the same time I need my work to give me a break from dancing. So I do a combination of both 24/7 and I love it.

Farlig tiger

Rotterdam Film Festival is finished for this time. Unfortunately, I missed it again, because I chose to dance salsa instead. Yesterday the usual Salsa Under the Bridge was relocated to IMAX instead of Prachtig. Fotos from the party are available at www.typicaltropical.nl
